Brian Sickle
An illustrator and series-based artist exploring our responsibility toward both wild and domestic animals
Brian Sickle
BIO
I am an artist/illustrator living near the Village of Kimberley in the beautiful Beaver Valley. I have illustrated and published Children’s Books and books of Poetry including one with Ingrid Remkins, the “Poet Laureate” of the Beaver Valley.
As an artist, I enjoy working in ‘Series’ where I can fully explore a theme and employ various media and techniques. “Wild!” is a series that uses minimal graphics and framing of the image to enable the viewer to confront wild animals that are the beings of the “shadow world” that weave their lives around us. Their steady, dispassionate gaze and elegance of being in their portraits commands our respect. Currently in progress, “Farm!” acts in a dialogue to Wild! to represent the animals that we raise around us. Their curious, collective and beseeching gaze underlines their dependence on us for their care and dignity. Ultimately, the portraits in the two Series demand our respect and attention and underline our ultimate responsibility for them.
