Frances Beatty is a Canadian photographer and mixed media artist based in Kimberley, Ontario, Canada. Their practice focuses on impermanence, memory and identity, often through the use of portraits and self-portraits.
They work primarily in analog photography often incorporating alternative photographic processes or digital photography.
Their work explores how memory is unreliable and altered through every interaction we have with it. The tension between preservation and transformation.
They have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography from OCAD University.
Their work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Most notably a group exhibition in Paris, France in 2024, a group exhibition in Times Square in 2015, a solo exhibition at the Lincoln Centre in NYC in 2012, and a solo exhibition in Toronto in 2008.
And is featured in Rrampt magazine, Instant Love, LoMo Magazine, Toronto Life and more.
Currently, they are creating a body of work focusing on landscapes, using alternative, historical photographic processes and mixed media
They are interested in experimenting with mixed media, storytelling, the meaning we imbue into objects and exploring alternative historical photographic processes that are hands-on and process-driven, and continue to develop their practice through research and collaboration.

Artist Statement
This ongoing body of work investigates the instability of memory and the fluidity of identity. Using analog, digital, and Polaroid photography, I create images that are deliberately obscured, layered, or anonymous. The resulting work suggests how memories shift over time, becoming fragmented or unreliable.
By presenting imagery that cannot be fully grasped, the work reflects both the complexity of personal identity and the inconsistencies inherent in recollection. What emerges is a visual meditation on how we perceive ourselves and others: never singular, never fixed, and always shaped by time, memory, and interpretation.
