BIO

Kate Esplen is a painter, sculptor, mixed media artist based in Meaford.

Their practice focuses on horses, roosters and all things beautiful in the countryside. They work primarily in oil, acrylic, sculpture wire and ceramics often incorporating gemstones, driftwood, and found objects.

Their work explores abstracting the subject to show the character, movement and emotion of subjects

They have a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Their work has been exhibited in museums, galleries in Canada, Costa Rica, USA and Czechia and is held in private collections.

Currently, they are current body of work explores emotion and movement in horses and humour in roosters and farm animals.

They are interested in exploration of mixed media and combining materials from sculpture and paint and continue to develop their practice through collaboration, study of different media and technical details.

Artist Statement

Kate Esplen explores the spirit and movement of horses through expressive abstraction. Layered brushwork, intuitive mark-making, and dynamic colour transform familiar equine forms into emotional landscapes. Her paintings capture energy, freedom, and connection, inviting viewers beyond representation into a space where memory, motion, and imagination converge.
