BIO
Raymond Macdonald is a painter and sculptor based in Kimberley ON Canada.
Their practice focuses on a form of figurative abstraction following the approach of disrupted realism. They work primarily in oil and acrylic paint combined with chalk pastels often incorporating mixed media.
Their work explores the dynamic interplay of figurative colour and movement, brought to life through the integration of printed paper and textured surfaces. I am fascinated by how dance and movement can be expressed through spatial patterns, revealing the rhythm and flow that animate the human form.
They have a BFA from the University of Guelph and a diploma from OCAD in Toronto.
Their work has been exhibited in a number of exhibitions throughout Guelph, Brantford, Toronto, St. Catherines, and Kimberley and is held in a number of private collections.
Currently, they are creating sculptures in cast concrete and carved and blackened wood incorporating ritual dried gourds
They are interested in concrete and additives to provide colour and durability and continue to develop their practice through the Church Basement Studio and community engagement with the artists cooperative Art in the Valley.

Artist Statement
I am drawn to scenes that present textured surfaces and unique colour combinations, as these elements provide a rich visual language for expressing energy and emotion. My inspiration comes from experimenting with new and unusual mediums and techniques, which allows me to push the boundaries of conventional art-making. What sets my work apart is my distinctive technique involving charring and waxed, hardened surfaces. This process adds depth and complexity to the pieces, creating a tactile experience that engages the viewer beyond the visual. Through this fusion of color, texture, and innovative methods, I aim to evoke the essence of movement and the vibrant life within each composition.
